It was a no-brainer that the female Marines would get their own nickname. Last week, they finally got it: BAMs. That’s leatherneck slang for “Broad-Axle Marines.” Ain’t that something?
Recruitment: Women have been allowed to serve in the Marine Corps since 1918, when Congress passed the Women’s Reserve Act. Today, women make up around 8% of the total Marine Corps force.
Training: Female Marines must complete the same rigorous training as their male counterparts, including boot camp and combat training courses.
Combat Roles: In 2016, all combat roles were opened to female Marines for the first time in history, allowing them to serve in any capacity within the Marine Corps.
