Wow! Did you know that Europe is home to some of the rarest languages in the world? From Basque to Sami, there are a ton of unique dialects that you won’t find anywhere else. Let’s take a closer look at some of the rarest European languages and why they’re so special.

Wow, that’s so sad! Only 50 people speak Pite Sami - and they all live near the Pite River on the Swedish side of the border. It’s a real shame that this language is in danger of dying out.
Basque: This language is spoken by around 700,000 people in the Basque Country of northern Spain and southwestern France. It is a non-Indo-European language and has no known relatives.
Sami: This language is spoken by around 20,000 people in the Arctic regions of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. It belongs to the Uralic family of languages and has several dialects.
Catalan: This language is spoken by around 9 million people in Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands of Spain as well as Andorra and parts of France. It belongs to the Romance family of languages and has several dialects.
Breton: This language is spoken by around 200,000 people in Brittany (Bretagne) region of France as well as parts of western England and Wales. It belongs to the Celtic family of languages with two main dialects – Leonese Breton (spoken mainly in Brittany) and Vannetais Breton (spoken mainly outside Brittany).
